Gary Hutzel was a visual effects supervisor best known for his Emmy Award-winning work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica. He won four Emmys in total and was nominated 16 more times.

He also lent his visual effects skills to the series Bionic Woman, Caprica and, most recently, Syfy’s Defiance. Additionally, he worked on several Battlestar Galactica television miniseries and specials, including The Resistance, Razor Flashbacks, The Face of the Enemy and Blood & Chrome. His telefilms included A Wrinkle in Time and Virtuality.

The effects whiz's feature film credits included Red Planet, starring Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss and Tom Sizemore; Spy Kids, starring Antonio Banderas; and Drive Angry, with Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard.

He got his start in Hollywood in the 1980s, when he served as second assistant camera operator on the 1985 film Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox.

Hutzel died March 3, 2016, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was 60.

 At the time of his passing, he was working on Beyond, the new drama from Freeform.
